The 2014 ‘Solent 650’ was a small fleet with three British entrants, one German and one French and was a great race to watch on the tracker. It was especially exciting for us as we had two boats flying our racing sails! Toby and Lizzy.

Toby who was co-sailing with mini veteran Pip Hare, had a very close battle with the tightly packed fleet all the way from Hamble UK to La Trinite in France.

They started out in a pretty light breeze for the first 24 hours, which is not the ideal conditions for the very powerful RG650 as it has a lot of wetted surface area, so it was great to see the duo managing to hold their own and point well in the light stuff.

As the race went on, the wind picked up a little and freed off to a reach, from here it was plain to see the RG650 starting to power up and flex her muscles.

In the small hours of this morning for several hours, the ‘Mintaka’ team were power reaching under A2 in 18 Knots of wind, with boat speeds of up to 2 knots faster than everyone else in the fleet, and it was here that Toby and Pip finally pushed past their sparing partners and into 2nd place overall and 2nd in class for the final run up to the finish line.
